Learn how to make Notebook Minis!

To start the new year off right, I'm sharing a tutorial for a project I'm making for Stampin' Up! Leadership swaps.

Notebook Minis

They are cute and fun to give and you don't need to own a Rubicoil to make these!

Happy New Year!

It's official. 2006 has come!

New Year's Ponderings

While I wait for the clock to move us all into the new year, I ponder the mysteries of stamping. Today I share with you some cool things I've discovered in the last few months.

Here is a .pdf document I found on shimelle.com entitled 101 Things to Do With Your Ribbon

Some of my favorite tips on this list include:

14. Criss-cross two lengths of ribbon to create a pocket.
26. Make a flower with loops of ribbon plus a button in the middle.
33. Fray ribbon scraps, then overlap and sew to the page.
52. Use polka-dot ribbon with striped patterend papers.
55.Use your ribbons in vertical strips instead of horizontal.
88. Spice up a simple layout with just three knots of ribbon near the corner of the photo.
89. Create a pinwheel design by sticking down bright ribbons out with an angle at the end.

Not exactly a poor girl's Z Becky Brown

A friend recently emailed me a link to a purse offered at Wal-Mart. It is being marketed as a photo purse, but she thought I'd like to see it since stamped art could be placed inside the panels as well. My jaw dropped at the price, however. $32.76 - $39.64 !

That is more money than I spent on my Z Becky Brown! And my Z Becky Brown is very classy looking with brass on the handles. Is the Wal-Mart version leather, I wonder? It doesn't say on the website. Certainly the plastic photo areas can't be that expensive to manufacture.

The Z Becky Brown style isn't for everyone, however, and I'm sure there are women that prefer a leather-look purse with soft sides. I won't be buying this purse. And I try my hardest never to set foot in a Wal-Mart because I dislike the company. (Although I admit I was forced to go there to purchase Name Frame photo frames because it is the only store that had the correct size frames.)

Scrapbook Page Magnets

Here is a product I came across about 2 months ago. Scrapbook Page Magnets
I haven't tried ordering some yet, but it looks easy. There is an order form and the customer is asked to provide a .jpg of the scrapbook page. They make a magnet out of it for your fridge.

Scrapbook Page Frames

Some scrapbook pages turn out so beautifully that scrapbookers wish to frame them. I found a frameable solution to this problem here

Scrapbook Sketches

Here is a blog full of scrapbooking sketches. The blogger is a digital scrapbooker, but any of these layouts can easily be used by paper scrapbookers as well.

Cute travel-themed project

As I continue to clean out my browser bookmarks getting ready for the new year, I'd like to share something I bookmarked awhile back. I was looking for some ideas for the DD gallery and came across this project. I never used this idea in the gallery, but I'll share it here. It's a suitcase-shaped scrapbook page. Originally I was going to make this using Stampin' Up! paper, Hodgepodge Hardware and twill tape for the December embellishment challenge. However, Michele Boyer created an awesome Sachel greeting card for that same gallery and I decided to put my ideas to use elsewhere. My thought was to use the Stampin' Up! safari background and the Direct to Paper technique to age the cardstock. Then I'd use a faux leather technique from the TJ newsletter to create the straps and use the buckles in the Stampin' Up! Hogdepodge Hardware. I may still create this project... maybe in a month or two!

and speaking of travel...
Emily le chat hired by Budget Travel magazine

In the ongoing saga of Emily le chat, it has been announced that Emily has been hired as a regular columnist for Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel Magazine.

Her qualifications include finding the best boatfare to France and best airfare from France recently as well as knowing the secret to finding the best French food and lodging at no cost.

Her experience impressed the editors at Budget Travel and they are giving her an office equipped with plush soft chair, dangly octopus toy and one-of-a-kind litter pan designed by world-renowned interior designer Laurence Llewelyn-Bowen.

Emily will begin her new position on Jan. 2 and she is hoping to make a big splash in the world of feline travel with her marvelous new ideas. "Meow, meow, meow meow, meow meow" said Emily about her new position.

For her next trip, she is considering Madagascar to have lunch with a lemur, or perhaps New Zealand, to have brunch with a bandicoot.

When an empty envelope in the mail one dost receive

Have you ever received an empty envelope in the mail? I suppose it isn't that unusual. There are a lot of busy forgetful people mailing things. I can easily see myself forgetting to place a payment in an envelope when doing bills. However, yesterday I received a USPS priority mail envelope with $3.85 in postage on it from someone on Splitcoaststampers. With great anticipation I opened the tab that says "Pull to Open" and much to my surprise, it was empty! I looked again, thinking that maybe whatever was in it was small and fell out when I opened it. Nope! There was nothing in the envelope. Nada, Zip, Zilch! What is even more perplexing is that I have no idea what this person had intended to send me. A beautiful stamped creation, perhaps? I'm not hosting any swaps right now, so that's not it. It's sad that she spent $3.85 to mail me um... nothing, but I think what is worse is not knowing what it was she intended to send!

Husband responsible for wife's creativity this morning

The wife in question is me, and the husband responsible is of course, Frank. The December DD gallery at Splitcoaststampers was supposed to be my last month of participation.

Due to unforseen circumstances, I am participating in the January gallery also. Since I hadn't planned on doing the January gallery, I didn't plan my projects ahead of time. I am now finding myself a bit at a loss as to what to create. For the last few days, I haven't been stamping much and I haven't had any great ideas for projects. Until this morning...

I was mentioning to my husband what the theme is for this month and that I was having trouble coming up with ideas. Well, if he didn't just give me a fantastic idea right then and there! "Why don't you do [this and this and this]...". I was amazed at his ideas! I jumped up and headed straight to the stamp studio and stamped up his idea! I also had to give him a piece of cardstock and told him to pick up a flower that matched it for the photo display!

Thanks dear, sweet husband!

I've got a New Years Project Tutorial for my readers!

I've decided to post - on New Year's Day, the first of many new features that will be posted here in 2006.

The project will be one of my Leadership/Memphis Regional swaps this year! I think you will love it. No, its not a card - not a container - not jewelry... but it is little and cute and adorable (and cheap, too!)

Why not ring in the new year with a new project?

Tee Hee! I know you are wondering what it will be!

Thursday Thoughts

As the Christmas mice settle back into their holes in the wall and the cats all return to their regular afternoon naps, the world settles back into routine after the magical Christmas holiday ends.

I was not able to see the reaction of my nieces when they opened their Christmas gifts. I hope they enjoyed their crafty gifts (pictured below):

Watercoloring with Best Blossoms

I should be wrapping gifts.

I REALLY should be wrapping gifts.

I'm not wrapping gifts! I'm playing with my Best Blossoms stamp set and Watercolor Crayons:

Violets Pearled
Shabby Blossoms
Watercolor Blossom
Sympathy Blossoms
Wedding Blossoms
FIL Birthday
Violets for Thoughts

Well, I have an excuse... I need to make cards to mail to my downline. So I NEED to make stuff with this set!

Getting things done

I finished the Name Frames I made for my nieces.
I need to make something to give the aunts for Christmas.

No line at the post office

My Christmas cards finally went out today. I went to the post office and imagine my surprise when I noticed there was NO LINE to wait in! I looked around and there were 3 post office representatives looking at me like "Which one of us gets to help her?"

They said the post office was unbelievably busy on Monday. I guess it works out better to be almost late with my cards! No waiting!

Playing Santa

A husband of an SCSer emailed me and is wondering if one of the members of Splitcoaststampers has any older Stampin' Up! catalogs to sell to him that he can surprise her with for Christmas!

Really in truly!

I can't tell you who the lucky SCSer is, of course!

I'm guessin' he wants something older than 1995 for her.

Basically, here is how it goes:

Send me a list of what you are willing to part with and I'll forward the messages to him in the next few days.

Help a husband make one of your SCS friends a happy Christmas stamper!

Digital Scrapbooking Decision Dilemma

If you know me, you know I am knowledgeable in the use of digital technology. The idea of Digital Scrapbooking appeals to me.

Recently I read an article on CNN about the growing trend of digital scrapbooking here.

I was also recently introduced to some digital scrapbook art made by Heather Nichols (Pinefeather on SCS). I was impressed.

Here are some examples that I found on Splitcoaststampers when I did a search:

Tae Kwon Joe page

Nap Time with Jack page

Spar! page

Joey's Rainy Day

I also found a 2-page layout that uses a combination of digital and stamping:
Always Remember page

Although I love the idea and I'd like to give it a try, I'm not sure I could give up the physical art of stamping with paper, ink and rubber. I love it too much. Also, since I work on a computer for my job, I like the idea of retreating to my art room away from the computer to work with my hands.

Maybe since one of my goals for next year is to scrapbook more often, I will invest in some digital scrapbooking software and give it a try. I may do as the last example above shows - a combination of both digital and stamping.

Has anyone found any great websites or do you have any ideas to share with me about digital scrapbooking? Please email me. I'd love to hear from you.

Things I've been too busy to write about lately

Christmastime is a wondrous time of the year, but it sure can be stressful! Not only are there the regular daily responsibilities, but also the added responsibilities of the season. And then, of course, the weather.

Snow has fallen several times already this season and shoveling out the driveway is not my idea of fun.

Jeeves, my diabetic cat, is doing better after having UTI problems. For the last week I've had to give my cat a pill each day. We are still recording his food and water intake and the doctor increased his insulin. Jeeves also got a bath today, so he smells really nice.

The tree -- well, lets just say we don't have the prettiest tree this year, but it is up. I didn't take the time to put the garland on it. We put the garland back in the plastic Christmas storage box and just put on some ornaments and bows. I figure to preserve my sanity, I can forgo the garland and a perfect tree.

My mom is getting a hand-stamped glass lamp for Christmas. I didn't make the name frames yet. I will do that next week.

In the meantime, I have some stamping thoughts to write about here:

I was published in the newspaper!
Kenosha News

Fiskars acquires 2 companies

Fiskars has acquired Cloud 9 Design and Heidi Grace Designs. Fiskars will support the design of products from the current headquarters of both companies, while moving the distribution divisions to Wausau, Wisconsin, and the operations to Fiskars’ North American headquarters in Madison, Wisconsin.

NOTE: About 2 years ago I went to Wausau and shopped at the Fiskars outlet. I got lots of great Fiskars products very cheaply. As a note to myself, maybe I need to make another trip up there again soon.

Optical Lens Art

In this month's Dirty Dozen Gallery on Splitcoaststampers, the theme is Embellishments and the color Blue. While preparing the projects, I chose to use an optical lens from Outside the Margins to make a vintage garden-themed purple necklace.

These optical lenses are really great. Just like the Z Becky Brown Purse, these necklaces can be customized and changed according to the season, your mood, or your outfit. They can be taken apart and snapped back together again. Both sides of the necklace can be decorated and charms can be added. Take a look at my creation in the December DD gallery here. (Membership is necessary to view)

I got a Christmas Card from Lila Holgate!
Isn't it cute????

Walnut Photo Image Tinting
I don't know if I mentioned it but I recently purchased some Photo Image stamps to try out this technique from the TJ newsletter. I haven't played with them yet though.

Cat stamps
I also recently ordered some cat stamps from Rubber Stamp Ave. I'm making some creations to sell at the local animal shelter I volunteer at called "Kindred Kitties". I already had lots of cat stamps, but one just can't have too many, so I bought some more.

In addition, one of my co-workers asked me to make a card/giftcard that he can give to his wife for Christmas. Inside it he wants to announce that she can redeem the giftcard through him to pick out a cat or kitten of her choice from the organization. How cool is that? He said she's been thinking about getting a cat for sometime, just wasn't sure they could afford it. What a sweet Christmas gift!

Online Email Holiday/Birthday/Event Reminder Service

I recently received an email letting me know about some Hallmark.com services (like I really need those!). I was going to delete the email, but something caught my eye. There is a reminder service available. You put in the dates, names and events; they email you reminders about them so you don't forget. Pretty cool. I'm giving it a try. I just made sure when I signed up to click the boxes stating I don't want promotional emails sent too!

Oh yes, and speaking of TJ

Check out the December TJ newsletter for my Tyvek Dying technique! This is super fun.

One more month

I thought this was my last month uploading to the DD -- well, I've got one more month to go, so you'll have to put up with my creations for one more month if you can stand it.

Altered Book Prep Class

Last week's Altered Book Prep Class at my home was cancelled due to the snowy weather. I'm rescheduling...

Sunday Scribblings

Dear Diary,

Today I ate a package of "Kissables" that my husband picked up on sale. I shouldn't have eaten them, since I am trying to cut down on chocolate. But I cheated and they were good. (That is the confession part of today's posting).

Hibernation Mode
About a week or two ago I slipped into what I could only call a "hibernation mode" - When I'm not working, eating or stamping, I sleep. A lot. Well, this morning was no different. I have a list of things to make for the December DD gallery and a list of things to make for Christmas gifts. Do you think I accomplished anything today? Nope. I took a nap and read a novel in bed. -- I can't help it! The house is chilly and the bed is so warm and cozy, especially with a warm purring cat nearby.

If I keep this up, I may not get my stamping done in time. Hmmm... do you think I could get my DH to move all my stamp stuff into the bedroom so I can stamp while under the blankets???!!

Christmas items I need to make

1. Name Frames for my 2 nieces
2. Microscope Slide shaker ornaments for my downlines
3. Glass ball ornaments for my in-laws
4. Pin for my mom
5. Journal for my mom-in-law

Projects I need to complete for the December DD Gallery at SCS

HA! Gotcha. Did you really think I'd spill the beans???

Sell-A-Bration

I'm starting to prepare for SAB. I pre-ordered one SAB set and I can't wait to get it so I can make SAB swaps with it.

Christmas Carols with Stamping Words

I'm on a list and someone posted a list of Christmas Carols with stamping words. I was reading through the songs - very cute. I think I'll sing some of these tunes next Wednesday at the Town of Caledonia stamp class. Maybe I'll make everyone else sing them too...

Here is one of them:

Deck the halls with foils and glitters, Fa la la la
la, la la la la.
Tis the season for us stampers, Fa la la...
Don we now our inks and powders, Fa la la...
Troll the heatguns and embossers, Fa la la...

See the card stock blank before us, Fa la la...
Strike the ink and join the chorus, Fa la la...
Follow me in merry masking, Fa la la...
Join us in some Yuletide stamping, Fa la la...

Faint away with chalks and markers, Fa la la...
Hail the new, ye rubber stampers, Fa la la...
Stamp with joyous all together, Fa la la...
Heedless of the times that's passed us, Fa la la...

Box Maker

A few months ago, I snagged a "Box Maker" thing on snaggingstampers. My plan this year, is to make boxes for some of the smaller gift items I'm giving. I won't need any wrapping paper. I can just stamp the box and put a ribbon around it.

I didn't try out the "Box Maker" yet, though... and off hand, I don't remember the actual name of the thing. When I get to that point in my Christmas preparations, I'll post here all about if this "Box Maker" actually works and what it is called.

I need to dig it out of the pile of magazines, cardstock, and tools that is sitting on my stamping table. I don't have the motivation to go do this now.
